Why isn't my sound working?

I have a dell laptop and my sound will not work! Inspiron . 1525 I checked everything and it will not work! I went to control panel and looked at the sound and it says everything is working! But if I go to manage audio devices then click sounds it says it is on windows. If I go one below *Asterisk* it will say test then say falied:( HELP
