Why are there two sides to Human Beings?

I have to write an essay on two sides to human beings. thats all the prompt says. i want to write about the reasons why we have an instinct of survival in times of crisis and we also have an instinct of selfishness in times of prosperity. Why are there two sides to human beings? Any explainations????
