When did politicians become rock stars?

What was up with the "walk" down the center row that the politicians did tonite? All the fawning and kissing...Quite distasteful. They said on CNN one senator got there at 8 this morning to get a good seat, so he could be seen! Is this what we pay him to do? They also said Jesse Jackson Jr. was there several hours early to get an aisle seat....
