Need Help With My Hair PLEASE!!?

i want to grow out my hair a little just about 2 or 3 inches long but i don't know wat type of hair i have, my hair is short and really thick. it seems like it wants to go every direction and it looks bad. Alot of hair sticks out of the top and sides of my hair and i really want to know why... the back is wavy for some reason and i guess its kind ove dry. i want to grow it but it doesn't want to....HELP!!! hope that helps
