My dvd burner wont burn or recongnize dvd's?

i brought and installed a lite on internal dvd+r/+rw but it only lets me play audio cd's, i downloaded some burn software, it dosent recongnize a dvd, when i put a dvd movie in,(after downloading dvd decoder) it plays, but it wont let me burn a dvd? why is that?
