James B Nutter messed up and we will be homeless in a few days!?

Is there any punishment for them? My parents were pre-approved in early January for, I think the amount was $160,000 plus the $10,000 down (cash). Then about a week or so ago they called my dad and said because of the new laws we were declined for the loan. After my dad speaking with the "agent" they "re-started" the paperwork. We were just going to have to move the closing date back 1 day. After faxing a novel to the builder to fill out a few days ago they then remembered they needed to have an appraisal done on the house. After doing some research we found out they hadn't even start the paperwork until Friday Feb 20th. The original closing date was yesterday Monday Feb 23. Today was the second closing date Feb 24. Now they can't get an appraiser into look at the house until this Thursday Feb 26 and she won't be able to get the paperwork to the company until Friday or even Monday. Our rental lease is up Friday night and the walk through with our land lord in Saturday morning. Now we really don't have a place to stay because we have a 13 year old Golden Retriever that everyone freaks out about because she's a dog...she lays around and sleeps all day. So as of right now if they can't get another appraiser in to do the appraisal before Thursday we have no place to live until all this mess is cleared up. I understand mistakes happen but they had over a week to fix whatever problem they had. They waited until the last possible moment and now we don't have a house to live in. Do we have any rights to punish them? Are there any laws that protect us?
