I have a question about jinn.?

I'm hoping a Muslim can answer my question. This may sound like a stupid question (and it probably is, please keep in mind I'm a bit ignorant on the subject) but, in the story of Aladdin would the "genie" be a jinn, or is the genie just a completely made up type of being? I know this probably isn't a very deep question, I'm only asking out of curiosity.
