Has anyone been to New Orleans recently? Want to know if it is a good place to vacation now?

I am about to book my summer trip and I have heard mixed reviews about the current state of New Orleans. I was planning on staying in the French District, are most places still open? How is that area and others? Is it in tact and worth vacationing?
