Getting ACL and meniscus repair surgery...have questions.?
I had the same thing happen, dislocated my knee and had to get the ACL/meniscus repair done. I also damaged a bunch of cartilage and they had to repair that as well. It was a long time ago though and I'm sure things are different these days. I was in the hospital for almost 2 weeks afterwards. I think they do the majority of ACL repairs on an out-patient basis now. I was 15 when I had my done. You know how resiliant teenagers are, I thought I was going to die from the pain. The first week was the worst. They make you walk on it right away, that's the hard part. The actual surgery itself I believe is about 2 hours, you can ask your doctor though. You're not going to be keeping weight off of your knee for very much. They want you walking on it right away. You'll probably have a brace and crutches. I had a cast from my ankle to my hip, it sucked. Like I said, the pain is tough to get through, but they'll give you some good drugs, take them around the clock as often as they say you can. If it says take them every 4-6 hours, then take them every 4-6 hours, at least for the first 48 hours. Then you can start to cut back and take them only as needed. It's difficult to get on top of the pain if you let it get out of control. So if you take the pain meds around the clock, you'll have a steady level of medicine in your blood and you'll be able to tolerate the pain better. You'll do fine. Just make sure you've got someone to help take care of you after the surgery for at least the first week. Take care! Good luck! BTW, how old are you?
