Why Did Jesus Christ Have To Die?

The more I read about the life of Jesus Christ, the more I wonder why he had to die such an unfathomable death. It seems to me that he was so young and undeserving of his trechorous death. He died at such a young age and he could have lived for many more decades and perhaps his legacy far greater. Why were so peeple intolerant of such a great spiritual being?
