Why cant an adult man have his girlfriend live with him in an apartment?

Technically and legally speaking, only people who are listed on the lease are allowed to live in an apartment. If you want to move in the apartment with your boyfriend, you need to ask the landlord to add you onto the lease. This gives the landlord some recourse if there is a problem (damages to the apartment or non payment of the rent).
