Why are doctors and lawyers the two career choices so often cited?

When you hear of career aspirations among the young or in rhetorical speeches, doctors and lawyers are the two titles that seem to always come up, as opposed to engineers, researchers, economists, etc. Where did these two professions get so much popular prestige compared to other equally important ones?
