Negative credit report - can I fix with quick payoff?

My credit card went over-limit and is effecting my credit report. If I pay the entire balance off tomorrow (tax refund yay!) can I ask the c.c. company to retract the negative reporting?? I know negative marks can stay on for 7 years or so...will this be the case?
