Married Joint file, with previous defaulted Student Loan.?

Before we were married my wife had a student loan. She is in default for the loan, not because of just not wanting to pay, but for financial reasons. She is unemployed now as well. When we filed our taxes jointly they took all of the refund for the student loan. Can we get some relief? a Great Majority of the Return was from my income not hers, and this was a debt that happened before we were married.
