What you thought of is the right thing to do, alternate upper, middle, and lower body. Make sure you work like muscles, so on the days you work chest by doing pushups and stuff, work your tricepts as well as your shoulders. On the days you work your upper and lower back, make sure you work bicepts too. Work all of your ab muscles by doing crunches, flutter kicks, and bus drivers. With legs, just work all of the muscles and you'll be good. If you want to buff up, eat less carbs and more protien, and if you want to tone your muscles, do less weight and higher reps.
