Liberation Theology has triggered much church controversy - what has being the impact of this?
Proponents say it emphasizes Christ's prophetic call for justice, his challenge to those in authority, and God's preference for the poor. Opponents claim it preaches a "social gospel" of pride and economic "salvation" without the need for Christ's atonement. Of course, those most opposed are rich and secure and don't like the idea of appearing responsible for the poverty of others. By condemning liberation theology, they can preserve the economic disparity of the status quo. They also like to point out its superficial resemblance to (atheistic) Communism.
