Kingsnake heating question?

I'm gonna use an under tank heater (uth) for my new California kingsnake, and gonna use shredded newspaper as substrate. Will it know not to be right on top of the gl where the uth is? Just curious because I heard they like to burrow a lot and I've heard of some snakes that won't move. Thanks.
