Is it a lame gift idea?

My friend is about to return home after serving a two-year mission. I'm a gal who is on the crafty side, so would it be a lame gift idea to make a pillow from a handkerchief I embroidered? The embroidery would include a map of the areas he has lived and worked in for the past two years. I know gals tend to be more on the sentimental side, but I'm trying to have a gift that has meaning ya know?
