If the 2nd Amendment says only militia can bear arms, why are people still allowed to own guns to hunt, etc?

I don't get it. Most court cases (until D.C. v. Heller) ruled that the 2nd Amendment affirmed collective rights. How come, then, individuals were still allowed to hunt for game and such? Why are there gun control laws when before 2008 the Supreme Court said that individuals can't own guns? I don't get it.
