How do you think scientists have inferred the positions of the CONTINENTS IN THE PAST AND IN THE FUTURE?
There is a lot of evidence to be gathered by comparing the types of rocks and by examining core samples drilled deep into the earth's layers. That goes back in time and they can see plant pollen, small creatures, atmospheric deposits from volcanoes or fires, and many other characteristics. If found in Brazil and also in west Africa, for example, and then the scientists do a carbon dating of the found similarities it is pretty certain the continents were together at one time in the distant past. By plotting the paths of continent parts that apparently drifted apart one can get a rough idea of the path it is on. Of course these land mes run into one another and from that collision we get mountain ranges and earthquakes.
