How can I restore my yard to its natural landscape?

I live in NW Indiana in an area that used to be all sand--the woods near my home are mostly dunes. I'm sick of my lawn (an acre worth of it!) and would like to return to the natural landscape of sand, prairie gr, etc. Any ideas on how I go about doing this?
