Color help, suggestions?

I have an old mirrored shadow box from 1951, and I'm refinishing it. I'm just about ready to paint it, and I'm stuck. It has a lot of carved detail in the woodwork, and I was originally going to make it look more contemporary by giving a dark chocolate color, and maybe even replacing the mirrored back with a solid back, painted in a complimentary color. Something like blue or even orange. (I love brown and orange.) But then I was thinking it would also look really nice in a white color, or distressed white with another color...Like that whole "shabby chic" look. I need HELP! Any suggestions?
