Catholics, why do you think you are so often TOLD what you believe rather than ASKED what you believe?

For example, when you tell people that you don't worship Mary - you know better than anyone what your religion teaches on the subject, and are therefore providing definitive answers "from the horse's mouth". So why do you think it is that the misinformation from fundamentalists persists?
