96 Mitsubishi mirage transmission possession?

have a 96 mitsubishi mirage with transmission demons. low and 2 work ok, won't shift out of 2nd though, and reverse is sluggish (it works if trying to back down a steep hill.) any chance there is something besides complete replacement... ie filter strainer or sensor that could be fooked?
